What makes a good teacher?
Learning Task 1: Think back to when you have learnt a new skill.
It may be from your childhood, a club or adult class you have been to or even just a colleague teaching you something new at work. Write down the things you remember about how that person spoke to you, explained things to you and demonstrated things to you. Were they funny? Caring? Fast paced?
The list you have just made will contribute to an overall list of qualities that create a good teacher. You don’t have to show, have or use all of these traits but a combination of these help. A teacher may show a range of any of these things:
- caring
- considerate
- thoughtful
- energetic
- passionate
- loud
- humorous
- fast paced
- quiet
- honest
- helpful
- kind
This isn’t an extensive list but gives you an idea of the qualities a teacher may demonstrate. If you have thought about working with others, the likelihood is, you have at least a few of these qualities. It is important to think about which of these qualities you openly demonstrate in life, these are the qualities you will tend to have when you are teaching and are the qualities you need to discuss and demonstrate when interviewing and applying for jobs.
What about skills?
The skills you need depend on the subject you are teaching and where and who you are teaching. Here are some examples of the type of skills you will need as a TEFL teacher:
- patience
- time management
- organisation
- adaptable
- self-reflective
- creative
- team work
- leadership
- independence
- focused
Learning Task 2: What type of teacher are you?
There is no right or wrong answer here but below, write 6 words to describe who you want to be as a teacher. For example; “ Caring, patience, creative, energetic, organised and funny”. You don’t need to use the examples given but they are there to help you.
Write these somewhere important; in a diary, on a whiteboard, on a post-it note and stick it somewhere near your desk. When we get to planning lessons later on, refer back to these. How can you show these skills in your plan.
